Checklist for Thesis and Dissertation Proposals

Checklist for Establishing Your Committee

For Thesis Committees

My committee consists of at least 2 members plus my committee chair

At least one member of my committee is from outside my program area

The majority of my committee members have regular graduate faculty status

No more than 1 member of my committee meets the requirements of a non-member of the graduate faculty

I have distributed the appropriate committee request form to my committee members and received their signatures

I have sent the signed form to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

The Assistant Director of Graduate Training has Approved my Thesis Committee

For Dissertation Committees

My committee consists of at least 3 members plus my committee chair

At least one member of my committee is from outside the Department of Psychology

The majority of my committee members have regular graduate faculty status

No more than 1 member of my committee meets the requirements of a non-member of

the graduate faculty

I have distributed the appropriate committee request form to my committee members and received their signatures

I have completed the Eberly Candidacy Form

I have sent the both the signed committee request form and the Eberly Candidacy Form to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

The Assistant Director of Graduate Training has Approved my Dissertation Committee

Checklist for Before the Meeting

For Thesis and Dissertation

I have established whether my meeting will be held in person or virtually

If meeting in-person or hybrid, I have scheduled a room through 25Live

If meeting virtually or hybrid, I have worked with my mentor to establish a primary and secondary means of remote access

I have ensured that my document is no more than 25 pages of text

I have sent an electronic and paper copy (unless only electronic requested) of my document to each committee member at least 10 working days prior to my scheduled defense

**For proposal meetings your committee does not need to provide tentative approval of your document prior to the meeting.

Checklist for During the Meeting

All members of my committee were present either in person or virtually

All members of my committee were able to see and hear me during the defense, and vice versa (i.e. all members must be visible on camera for duration of virtual meetings)

I recorded the outcome of my proposal and notified the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

I sent the finalized copy of my document to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

*The decision regarding the results of my defense was noted and the results either in the form of signatures on my cover page or email votes provided to my advisor were passed along to Assistant Director of Graduate Training

**In the case of approval with changes: A list of all changes was compiled and                   addressed. Once the committee has reviewed the edits and voted to approve the edits, the list of edits, revised document, and votes of approval should be sent to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

***In the case of non-approval, revise and schedule another proposal meeting after          discussion with your committee chair

My committee was previously approved prior to my proposal meeting

If my committee make-up has changed for any reason, I have completed the change in committee request form and received approval from the Assistant Director of Graduate Training 

Checklist for Before the Meeting

For Thesis and Dissertation

I have established whether my meeting will be held in person or virtually

If meeting in person or hybrid, I have scheduled a room through 25Live

If meeting virtually or hybrid, I have worked with my mentor to establish a primary and secondary means of remote access

At least 15 working days prior to my scheduled defense, I have sent an electronic and paper copy (unless only electronic requested) of my document to each committee member

At least 10 working days prior, I have added my defense to the University’s Calendar of Events

At least 10 working days prior, I checked with my advisor that the committee has provided tentative approval of my document

At least 10 working days prior, I have checked with my advisor confirming that they have notified the Assistant Director of Graduate Training that my committee has agreed to hold my defense 

At least 10 working days prior, I have completed and sent my Defense Date Declaration Form to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

Checklist for During the Meeting

All members of my committee were present either in person or virtually

All members of my committee were able to see and hear me during the defense, and vice versa (i.e. all members must be visible on camera for duration of virtual meetings)

All members of my committee signed the Oral Defense Form immediately following my defense

Immediately following my defense, I sent the signed Oral Defense Form to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

I noted all changes my committee required of my document

I edited my document according to all committee requests

I received approval from my committee that the edits were acceptable

My committee signed my ETD form

The signed ETD and finalized document were sent to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training

My ETD was submitted to the library

After my ETD was approved by the library, I forwarded the approval email to the Assistant Director of Graduate Training
